Dope Digs: The Yard Bangkok

I’ve been waxing poetic about my neighborhood Ari for quite a while, but now I’m convinced it’s the best place to be in all of Bangkok for locals and visitors alike ~ all thanks to a little place called The Yard.

The brainchild of two Bangkok natives, this hostel/bar/community event space is a tranquil haven whether you’re a traveler seeking a quiet place off the tourist trail or a Bangkok-based expat looking to host an upcoming event.

Meet Som

and Som!

These lovely ladies not only share the same name, but also the unwavering desire to make their wildest dreams a reality. Office jobs just weren’t going to cut it for this creative duo, who also run their own clothing company ~ More Than Clothes.

Instead, they had their hearts set on creating a community space for both locals and foreigners ~ a home away from home where people from all over the world could come together and feel like they’re part of the family.

Seven years in the making, The Yard finally came to fruition in February 2015, satisfying the need for a cool, affordable place to stay in Ari with a strong focus on community building and sustainability.

The walls are made from recycled shipping containers, while glass water bottles are provided for easy (and green!) refills. The shampoo and body wash containers in the communal showers offer a kind reminder to conserve water, and you can rent bikes (50 THB/day) to explore the neighborhood without having to worry about your carbon footprint.

Highlighting the familial theme, each room is named after a different family member ~ including the Pi (Grandfather) Private Garden Room and the Lung (Cousin) 4-Bed Private Room. The interiors are minimal, albeit a few quirky design details from markets, second-hand shops and Som Big’s family home.

The real draw is the hostel’s namesake yard ~ an oasis of green space hidden away from all the Bangkok chaos. It’s where you’ll start the day with your included breakfast parfait (served from 7:30-10:30am), and most likely where you’ll finish it off with drinks from the small on-site bar.

A retreat to the family room is the perfect escape from the afternoon sun, offering a tranquil space to laze the day away with a large collection of books and movies, as well as a hodge-podge of pillows and loungers to enjoy them from.

But when the sun goes down, it’s back to the yard for Thai cooking lessons and beers with the hostel crew. Locals and expats can also get in on the action with various community events, such as massage lessons and BBQ parties, that are open to everyone. Keep up with the The Yard’s Facebook for details.
